The big thing that needs to be reminded is this: patience. If a kid is acting out or not co-operating, we can’t get mad. Let the camp deal with it and just politely ask the councillors to assist.
Be yourself. You’re a magician but not in character. Dress casual. Enjoy the time. You must be hands off (no hugs, as some kids can be a bit clingy – high 5s and fist bumps only). While you can be friendly with the kids, we cannot tease them, call them purposely by the wrong name or undermine them. Additionally, we must be conscious of mis-gendering etc. I suggest a few funs tricks you won’t teach at the end of the day to wrap with.
If you’re doing the first day, the best strategy is this: Introduce yourself, walk through the format (4-6 tricks a day, spread out 25 minutes at a time), boxes stay til the end of the week and should be away from where they’re watching the demonstration (kids tend to fiddle or get distracted by it). I have them either put them along the wall or under their chair/desk (if you have that setting). Tell them we practice, practice, practice and some tricks are easier than others. Do the first trick then hand out the boxes as they learn that first trick. You write the names down on their box, going around introducing yourself to them one by one. It’s a quick way to learn names.
